Fourteen years, and still the one writing the code

I started building websites in 2012 and never moved into pure management. That is deliberate: when you brief me, you are talking to the person who will do the work, so the estimate comes from someone who has to honour it. Most of what I build is unglamorous and load-bearing — a parts catalogue a distributor sells from every day, a point-of-sale tied to live stock, a manufacturer's site that has to explain a six-stage process before a buyer will commit. The work that lasts is rarely the work that wins design awards.

01Will you be the one doing the work?

On development, yes. App work goes to Junaid, WordPress builds are often shared with Ubaid, and SEO, marketing and content are handled by Laiba, Seerat and Usama. You are told who is on your project before it starts.

02Which platform should I build on?

It depends on what the site has to do, not on what I prefer. A brochure site or a small shop is usually WordPress. A catalogue with awkward pricing rules is usually custom or Laravel. If Shopify is the cheaper, saner answer, I will say so even though it is less work for me.

03Can you take over a project someone else started?

Usually. I will audit what exists first and tell you honestly whether it is worth continuing or cheaper to rebuild. I will not quote a rescue that I think will fail.

04Do you work with legacy stores?

Yes — Zen Cart and older OpenCart installs are a regular job, either keeping them running or migrating them somewhere maintained without losing the catalogue, the customers or the rankings.

05How do you quote?

A fixed written quote after we have talked through the brief, usually inside 48 hours, with the scope and the dates in it. If something later falls outside that scope, you hear about it before any work happens, not on the invoice.

06Who owns the finished work?

You do — the code, the design, the content, the domain and every account, in your own name. I have seen too many businesses held hostage by a former developer to do it any other way.
